Rock-climbing Converts!

When you homeschool, one would not expect too much difference when the school holidays roll around. And I suppose there isn't in regards to having your children around all day but for me its a break in thinking about schooling, planning units studies and the general day to day routine that goes with schooling in our house.  During the term, our morning is usually filled with schooling, and it finishes around lunchtime. Sometimes it gets left to the afternoon if there is something on in the morning.  But generally the afternoon is a time for baking, gardening, building tree houses or just playing with the hose making mud puddles!  (therefore making more washing for me)

Mud puddles in Mums garden!

I am not one for having my kids watch TV/DVDs and we encourage them to find things to do outside or use their imagination inside. But is saying that sometimes it is so nice to have a little peace and quiet and be free of constant demands and chatter I chuck on a DVD.

DVD time!
These holidays so far have been rather relaxing but we have spent time with visiting family, time in the garden and a rather physical day spent with a friend and her wee children - ROCKCLIMBING!  I so love giving the children 'experiences' so whilst its not something I would love to do, I knew they would enjoy it and that I would enjoy watching them 'experience' it.

I am a total Rock-climbing convert (well not me personally) but for kids its great fun.  Even Sophie (2) had a turn, granted I had to hold her up and guide her feet as to where to go and she only climbed two metres but still, she was keen as mustard.

The two older boys had challengers to see who could climb the highest and who reach the roof first!

Tom (6) just getting his confidence and didn't make up to the top but was just happy to have a go on nearly every climb on offer.

Kaitlyn (4) oh my, has NO FEAR!  She climbed that wall like she was spider-girl!  She so does not get that from her mother I tell you.

Kaitlyn

She yells out way  up high and says "Hey I am getting great at this"  (clearly she doesn't have a problem patting herself on the back)

That night I had very very tired children but at dinner time Kaitlyn was poking her quiche around (it had broccoli in it) and I told her that "broccoli would make her climb higher next time".  She quite liked that idea, so it was quickly devoured. Thomas on the other hand said to me "Um well then can I save mine until I go Rock-climbing again?"   I love his logic!

So it gets a big thumbs up from me and we most definately be going again.

Making Memories

I am really big on making memories and building traditions for my children.
Sometimes you just have to do things on purpose to build memories for your kids.  Sometimes you have to put in a bit of an effort especially when you just can't be bothered.  I tell people that if you want your children to have good family memories and traditions, YOU have to make them happen.   Like I really want my kids to have cool memories of summer camping holidays, so what do we do, we camp every summer!

So if you want your kids to have memories of family backyard cricket then I am sorry but you are actually going to have to play backyard cricket!

Just recently just for practice (with summer camping coming up and all) the kids made a wee 'campfire' and we roasted marshmallows.  (at the time all I wanted to do was curl up on the couch and read my book)

One of the things that my children just love to do is to roast marshmallows over a 'campfire' and moosh them in between Chocolate Thin biscuits and shove them in their mouths.  All sticky, all gooey!

We even have especially made marshmallow roasting prongs that are extra long so no one gets there eyebrows singed off!

I had forgotten how sickening they can be after the fifth one!  I am so greedy!

I think the boys just like to muck around with the fire too! (Dad included)

Happy Memory Making
